Passive Network Components

Passive network components are physical devices used in networking that do not require power to operate and do not actively process or amplify signals. Instead, they simply allow signals to pass through them or help in the transmission by directing or splitting the signal.

Common Passive Network Components:
  • Cables
    • Examples: Ethernet cables (Cat5e, Cat6), fiber optic cables, coaxial cables
    • Purpose: Carry electrical or optical signals between devices.
  • Connectors
    • Examples: RJ45 connectors, fiber connectors (LC, SC)
    • Purpose: Connect cables to devices or other cables.
  • Patch Panels
    • A panel with multiple ports to manage and organize network cables.
  • Wall Jacks & Faceplates
    • Mounted on walls; provide a clean way to plug network cables into the building's network infrastructure.
  • Racks and Enclosures
    • Used to physically organize and secure networking equipment.
  • Splitters and Couplers
    • Used to split a signal into multiple paths or connect two cables together.
